The media’s role in multicultural societies
A seminar about media and immigrants will be hold Friday 29th of may at Gimli, University of Iceland, room 102. There will be discussed what possible influence the media can have on immigrants’ social adjustment and how it can increase multicultural discussion in the society. Media studies and MA students in journalism from the University of Iceland host the seminar.
Ed Klute, manager of Mira Media in Holland, will for example discuss the development in multicultural media the past few years. Mira Media has, from the year 1986, fought for making minority groups with another ethnic background more visible in the media. Their goal is to increase diversity by encouraging immigrants to participate in jobs related to media.
Helga Ólafs, MA student in journalism, will also introduce the conclusion in her research about media usage of Polish people living in Iceland.
In the end there will be open discussions. All interested are encouraged to come and listen to instructive speeches and participate in the discussions.
For more information contact Helga Ólafs, tel: 899-8890.
