News from the Intercultural Centre (March 18)
The Intercultural Centre celebrates the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is 21 March but will be celebrated at the Intercultural Centre on Friday 20 March.
Progamme:
12:00: Dane Magnusson, the chairman of the Association of anti-racists will talk to us about the importance of anti-racism education. This talk will be in Icelandic and will be in the reception area of the Intercultural Centre on Laugavegur 37.
13:00-15:00: Open House. The Intercultural Centre invites everyone to come and learn about the activities of the centre, and to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.
Now it is more important then ever to combat racism and to be aware of it’s forms and it’s effects. The event is free and everyone is welcome!
Lögrétta tax services
Lögrétta Legal Services, the association of legal students at Reykjavik University- in cooperation with Deloitte, will be offering individuals free advice and assistance filing tax returns in 2009.
The services will be 21 March between the hours of 09:00 and 21:00 at the Reyjavik University located at Ofanleiti 2, 103 Reykjavik. All are welcome.
What must I have with me?
• Salary statement (launamiði) for the past year
• Internet password and ID token needed to access your on-line bank account
• Password for access to www.rsk.is
• Documents of all real-estate purchases or sales that have happened during the past year.
• Documentation of all purchase or sales of any securities and their balances at the end of the year.
Young people and multiculturalism next Wednesday
The Icelandic Redcross in Kopavogur and the Cultural house Molinn are hosting an event “Young people and multiculturalism” on March 25th. The event is held at Molinn (adress: Hábraut 2, Kópavogur, close to the church in Kopavogur central).
The event starts at 20:00 ( house opens at 19:30) and ends at around 21:30. First Unnur Dís Skaptadóttir a professor in anthropology will speak about multiculturalism in Iceland. Next Yousef Tamimi, a twenty year old student will speak about his experience of growing up in Iceland and having a Palestinian background. Vuong Nu Thi Dong who moved to Iceland from Vietnam at the age of 14 will also speak. At around 21:00 the student theatre from MK and FB will perform scenes from their musicals.
The event is free of charge and open to everybody.
The project New opportunities starts
The project New oppportunities recently started. The project aims at increasing job opportunities for young immigrants in the vast job landscape the city offers for children and teenagers. Internships and various educational courses are offered to participants. New opportunities focuses on using the participant‘s background and native language in their favour. Participants in the project are 14 girls from eight countries. In the next few weeks the girls will be very visible in Breiðholt, where they will be interning once or twice a week in various places working with children who speak their native language.
The project is a collaboration between Þjónustumiðstöð Breiðholts, Miðberg, Vinnuskóli Reykjavíkur, the Red Cross and the Intercultural Centre. It was awarded a grant last year from Forvarna- og framfarasjóður Reykjavíkur.
The dark truth photo reportage
Gerðuberg welcomes you to the opening of the Dark truth photo reportage on Saturday March 21st at 14.00 (Gerðuberg 3-5, 111 Reykjavík). The photo reportage “The Dark Truth: Coal Miners of China” exposes some of the working conditions in the world largest coal industry, an industry that is fuelling the Economic “Miracle” of China. It has been estimated that at least 12.3 million people in the world are trapped into forced labour creating the basis of modern slavery. The photos were taken by Cinzia D’Ambrosi, who is an idependent photo journalist.
