Unknown Man Tries to Lure Children Into Cars
An unknown man has on three occasions tried to lure children into his car in Hafnarfjördur, near Reykjavík, in the past few days. He is described as fat and drives a large, old, blue American car with darkened windows.
He is said to have called a girl outside the elementary school Setbergsskóli on Wednesday. “She wasn’t sure whether there was one or two men,” recounted the school’s principal Hrönn Bergthórsdóttir to Fréttabladid.
“He told her that her mother had been in an accident and that they had come to drive her to the hospital. She was clever, so she ran away,” Bergthórsdóttir said.
The girl’s mother notified the principal who called the police and sent a warning to all parents of the children in her school and also contacted principals of other schools in Hafnarfjördur.
The mother of a boy in Setbergsskóli contacted Bergthórsdóttir last weekend to tell her that a man had tried to lure her son into his car with the same lie on Saturday night.
“Then the assistant principal of Laekjaskóli called me. A man in the same car, as it appears, called a girl in the Laekjaskóli neighborhood and said something similar.”
Bergthórsdóttir urges parents to discuss the matter with their children and stress that they should never get into cars with strangers.
A similar case surfaced in the capital region last spring.
