Richmond Police Confiscate Cars on Way to Iceland
Police authorities in Richmond have confiscated 11 vehicles which looked new and were about to be shipped to Iceland, claiming they were stolen and that their registration numbers had been changed. The Icelandic shipping company did not suspect a thing.
“It was obviously well organized,” a spokesperson for Eimskip shipping company, Gylfi Sigfússon, told Fréttabladid. He added that everything had seemed legal and that customs had not made any remarks suggesting otherwise.
The cars, among them luxury cars like Range Rovers and Hummers, were sent to Eimskip’s headquarters in Richmond in February and March. Eimskip was first ordered not to ship the cars to Iceland as planned, and then they were confiscated by police.
According to Sigfússon, the purchasing price for these vehicles was between ISK 20 and 30 million (USD 266,000 and 399,000, EUR 167,000 and 251,000), which a car dealer in Iceland had already paid.
“These cars will never arrive in Iceland and the Icelandic car dealer will lose his money,” Sigfússon said, adding that the cars had been purchased from a dealership in the New York area and that cars from this company had never been imported to Iceland before.
