National Hospital of Iceland Prepares for Emergency

The National Hospital of Iceland (LSH) has created an emergency plan which will be executed if 52 roentgen technicians and 96 surgical nurses decide to resign at midnight on Wednesday next week, as they have announced they will.

“We are finishing negotiating with roentgen technicians and reviewing the situation so that we can be clear about things,” Ásbjörn Jónsson, director of LSH’s image analysis division, told Fréttabladid. “We have asked them to give us an answer by Friday on whether they will hand in their resignations or not.”
Jónsson said their emergency plan will ensure that people who have urgent need for roentgen technicians will receive the service they require. “But if [the resignations] will happen the operations [of the image analysis division] will of course be greatly affected.”

Anna Stefánsdóttir, acting director of LSH, said negotiations with surgical nurses are currently taking place with employees on an individual basis. “Some of the nurses we have already talked to will let us know [today] whether they will resign or not.”

Stefánsdóttir emphasized that the nurses had not been made any offers during the discussions. “They are first and foremost dissatisfied with changes of the arrangement of their shifts,” she explained. “We tell them about the hospital’s point of view and point out that this new arrangement can prove better for them than the old arrangement.”

Stefánsdóttir said the emergency plans will enable acute surgeries to take place even if the nurses decide to resign as well as urgent surgeries related to cancer.
