National Meeting on Iceland’s Sovereignty Day
A national meeting on the crisis is planned at Arnarhóll (a small park surrounding a hill where the statue of the first settler of Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson, is located) in central Reykjavík at 3 pm today on the occasion of the Sovereignty Day of Iceland.
On December 1, 1918, 90 years ago today, Iceland achieved sovereignty from Denmark and later achieved full independence and became a republic on June 17, 1944.
The organizers of the meeting call themselves the Public Movement and are comprised of individuals that have been outspoken during the recent wave of protests. The organization is not associated with any political party, Morgunbladid reports.
Various labor unions are encouraging members to attend, including Rafidnadarsamband Íslands and BSRB (Federation of State and Municipal Employees).
Workers are urged to take the afternoon off and join the Public Movement in their demands for a different administration in the country.
A statement from the organization reads that Iceland’s public has lost faith in both the current government and the opposition and that the country’s sovereignty has been jeopardized.
Speakers at the meeting include author Einar Már Gudmundsson, nurse’s aid Lárus Páll Birgisson, laborer Margrét Pétursdóttir, student Snaerós Sindradóttir and economist Thorvaldur Gylfason.
