University of Iceland to Offer Summer Courses
Kristín Ingólfsdóttir, rector of the University of Iceland (HÍ), is hoping to be able to offer between 30 and 35 courses next summer to meet the demands of students who are facing unemployment after the current semester concludes next month.
“We estimate that we can offer both courses and exams that follow these courses and exams that are part of self-study,” Ingólfsdóttir told Morgunbladid, adding that a variety of courses is planned to meet the needs of a broad group of students.

“We are looking for opinions from students. We are for example undertaking a survey in the education division especially to learn more about the wishes and needs of students,” Ingólfsdóttir explained.

Ingólfsdóttir said that both teachers and other university staff are prepared to shorten their summer vacations to make this happen.

According to her, others are also prepared to help, “companies, intuitions and even individuals have contacted us and offered free teaching and facilities for studying,” Ingólfsdóttir stated.

The government decided on Tuesday to increase the equity of the Student Loan Fund (LÍN) by ISK 600 million (USD 4.7 million, EUR 3.6 million) to provide students who are facing unemployment in summer with loans to cover their basic living expenses, mbl.is reports.

Usually LÍN doesn’t provide student loans in summer.
