Lava Turns into Art at the Reykjavik Arts Festival

An exhibition by Halldór Ásgeirsson and Paul Armand Gette entitled “What Volcanoes?” opened at the the ASÍ Art Museum yesterday as part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival, which closes on June 15.

Gette and Ásgeirsson have a joint interest in volcanic activity, but their approaches to the theme are different.

Gette researches the interplay of feminity and other natural phenomena with the use of science, which is logical since he is originally educated as a biologist.

Ásgeirsson, however, investigates the interplay of symbols and earth, water, fire and air. He welds together lava from different corners of the world until it turns into a black glaze.

The artists weave the exhibition into the museum with their conversations on nature and feminity.

The ASÍ Art Museum is open every day except Mondays from 1 pm to 5 pm and admission is free.
