New Coast Guard Cruiser Thór Arrives in Iceland
The new cruiser of the Icelandic Coast Guard, Thór, the construction of which was completed in Chile last month, arrives to the Westman Islands off the country’s southern coast today. People can step on board and look at the ship from 2 to 8 pm.
Tomorrow, Thursday (originally “Thor’s Day”), Thór will be welcomed at Midbakki in Reykjavík at 2 pm. The ship will be docked there the following three days during which visitors will be shown around the ship from 1 to 5 pm.
According to Morgunbladid, Thór will then embark on a journey around the country with stopovers in various harbors to give locals the chance to take a look at the new Coast Guard cruiser.
The arrival of Thór marks a milestone in the safety of fishermen and patrolling of Icelandic waters in regards to protection of the country’s resources, fisheries supervision, legal supervision and search and rescue, visir.is reports.
The cruiser was designed specifically with the needs of Icelanders and future challenges in the North Atlantic in mind, and the ability to rescue larger vessels will improve drastically with its arrival.
Thór is 93.8 meters long, 16 meters wide and a towing capacity of 120 tons. For comparison, the Coast Guard’s other cruisers, Aegir and Týr, are 71.15 meters long, ten meters wide and have a towing capacity of 56 tons.
Týr was constructed in 1975 and Aegir in 1968. The construction of Thór began in 2007 but was delayed by one year because of the earthquake in Chile in 2010. Yet the cost of construction is within the total budget.
