Improved Security at Hvalfjördur Tunnel

Fifty-seven automatic safety cameras have been placed inside the tunnel below Hvalfjördur fjord, north of Reykjavík, in addition to the previous 24. The measures were conducted due to harsh criticism of the tunnel’s safety standards by German experts.

The additional cameras will make sure that accidents and unexpected incidences can be reacted to more quickly than previously. The system costs ISK 60 million (USD 516 million, EUR 391 million), ruv.is reports.

Gylfi Thórdarson, managing director of Spölur, which operates the tunnel, said it has often happened that cars stop in protrusions in the tunnel.

Other measures to increase safety in the tunnel include better lighting; more improvements will be made next year, Thórdarson said.
