18-year-old icelandic girl has been stripping and performing solo sexual acts via a webcam on the internet
A stack of designer clothes sprawled across her bed and a molested credit card in hand, an Icelandic teenage girl steeped in debt wonders how she will claw her way out of her financial sinkhole. “I know!” She thinks. “I’ll charge people to see me do naked stuff on the internet.”
This week it was revealed that an 18-year-old student from Kópavogur has been stripping and performing solo sexual acts via a webcam on the internet.
The story is the most read and second most emailed article on visir.is and it seems the whole nation is wrapped up in a moral debate.
In an interview with DV the girl, who goes by the name Kata or "Webcam Prinsessan" (“The Webcam Princess”) explains that she uses MSN and her website to get business, though she always keeps her face out of the frame of the camera, never meets anyone she does business with in person, nor does she reveal her true identity.
“I lost myself in Karen Millen,” Kata elaborates. “I bought an outrageously expensive coat, a skirt, a top and three pairs of shoes. My mistake was getting a Visa.”
In the interview The Webcam Princess mentioned how disappointed she was with her bank saying they did not truly educate her about the consequences—in most Nordic countries you are automatically offered a credit card as soon as you hit 18.
“You aren’t warned about how easy it is to fall into debt,” Kata continued, pegging the majority of her debt to clothes shopping, since: “I never take drugs, I rarely drink and I don’t smoke cigarettes.” Kata said she felt the pressure to be fashionable in Iceland really taking a toll on her, especially with the growing image-conscious youth, hell-bent on wearing the newest and coolest threads.
Still, we shouldn’t have 18-year-old girls selling their bodies on the internet because they felt like having a shopping spree. Besides, at 18 you should know what credit is and that when you abuse your card you’re spending the bank’s money, not your own.
The article has started an outrage, with one visir.is blogger flat out calling the girl a whore. Of course one would argue that there are better ways to get out of debt, but I don’t think it’s fair to attack Kata quite so viciously. After all it is easy to call a young girl (with some skewed choices) a whore from a high horse, but let’s not forget that she wouldn’t be doing it if there weren’t people out there willing to pay her good money to do it.
Also, though she is only 18 she is a legal adult and responsible for her own body, what she decides to do with it, or to it, in front of a webcam is really her own business.
Some have theorized that she was molested or peer pressured into sexual activity when she was young but in the interview she firmly says that she would only ever have sex with someone she loved and once she had fallen in love she would quit stripping online for cash.
According to Chief Constable of the Capital Region Police Geir Jón Thórisson, what Kata is doing is illegal and should she be caught and prosecuted she would be charged with the distribution of pornography which is illegal in Iceland.
OK, I admit I personally wouldn’t have chosen this job to pay off my debts but I would rather have this girl stripping off in the privacy of her own home, where her identity is completely masked and where she is for all intents and purposes safe, than selling her body on the streets, which hypocritically is legal in Iceland.
At the end of the day the message the police are sending is that stripping off so someone can see you on a computer monitor on the other side of the world is illegal but making yourself vulnerable to disease and potentially dangerous situations on the street is A-OK.
Hopefully this will hit home with a few parents because if you think your teens are spending a bit too much on clothes, remind them that there is more to them than what their bodies portray and more to life than fancy clothes.

visa card should be forbiden for children under 21.. I think. Youngh people should not have an access to credits. Make money, spend money. They are not able to make a plan for the future saving or payments. At least not all of them, and my opinion is that there is no need for the children to have a credit card
