Man Perishes in Fire in Northwest Iceland

A man in his late forties was killed in a fire at his home in Blönduós, northwest Iceland, on Sunday morning. The fire was reported at 6:15 am when neighbors saw a dense cloud of smoke billowing out from the man’s apartment.

Smoke divers went in to check if there were people inside the apartment, but when they found the man he was already dead, Fréttabladid reports.

The apartment was ablaze and it took two hours to extinguish the fire. It is severely damaged. The apartment belonged to an apartment complex but fire fighters managed to save the adjacent units. No one else was harmed in the fire.

The origin of the fire is being investigated by Akureyri police, but they do not believe that any crime is involved.

This is the second fire-related death in Iceland this year. In January a man was killed after saving a woman and two children from a burning apartment in Reykjavík.
