Norwegians Like Icelandic Chocolate

A Norwegian company has ordered 100 tons of licorice chocolates from Icelandic candy producer Freyja, Draumur, Djúpur and Hitt. These brands are also sold in Sweden, Denmark and the Faroe Islands.

“We have sold these products to Norway before but in less quantity. Norwegians like these chocolates so much that the company thought there was a reason to order more,” managing director of Freyja, Aevar Gudmundsson, told Morgunbladid.

Gudmundsson said the sale of Icelandic candies in Iceland has also increased lately while the sale of foreign candies which Freyja imports has decreased. Candy may be subject to price increases because of higher production cost and the depreciation of the króna.

“We recently advertised price decrease of candy but I don’t know for how long we can offer lower prices,” Gudmundsson said. “For the past year the price of cocoa butter, which is the main ingredient of chocolate, has increased incredibly.”

“However, it appears that the price increase in cocoa products is dropping again, but the exchange rate [of the Icelandic króna] spoils it,” Gudmundsson added.

Freyja was founded in 1918 and is currently celebrating its 90th anniversary.
