Cruise Ships Continue to Sail to Iceland

At least 80 cruise ships have already been booked to dock in Reykjavík harbor next year, which means that between 55,000 and 60,000 tourists will come ashore. It appears that despite the economic crisis, tourists keep flocking to Iceland.

“2008 has been a very good year,” Erna Hauksdóttir, managing director of the Icelandic Travel Industry Association (SAF), told Fréttabladid. “Eightly-three cruise ships came here and 76 last year.”

“Bookings for next year look very promising and we expect at least as many cruise ships to come as this year,” Hauksdóttir said, adding that it is becoming more common for cruise ships stay in Reykjavík for 24 hours longer than usual which means increased trade.
