Residents Predict End of Habitation on Flatey Island
The Public Roads Administration has decided to gradually lower its subsidy for ferry transport to Flatey island on Breidafjördur fjord, west Iceland, until it will be abolished in 2009. Residents predict this decision will lead to the end of Flatey as an inhabited island.
“I guess this means that both tourism and habitation on the island will come to an end,” Flatey resident Hafsteinn Gudmundsson told Fréttabladid.
After the subsidy for ferry transport is abolished in 2009, the Public Roads Administration plans that the ferry Baldur will only sail between Stykkishólmur and Flatey two times a week.
“It will greatly affect the tourist industry here if people cannot come here to stay for one weekend anymore,” Gudmundsson said. “And although I’m not planning to move anytime soon it will be very bad for me if friends and relatives cannot drop in for a short visit anymore.”
