Reykjavik protests grind on, hope to regain momentum

The weekly protests outside the Icelandic parliament in Reykjavik took place for the 11th consecutive week yesterday, but MBL.is reports that, like last Saturday, the gathering was very quiet.

Part of the quietness was due to an 11 minute silence – one minute for each week the protesters have gathered to demand the resignation of the board of the financial regulatory body and the central bank, and for new parliamentary elections.

Protest organizer Hordur Torfason told Morgunbladid that yesterday’s protest went well, although many fewer people attended than they used to. He puts the low turnout down to people being too busy preparing for Christmas.

In a direct nod towards George W. Bush’s recent experience in Iraq, a pair of shoes was thrown at Althingishusid (parliament house) during the protest.

The Voice of the People organization is putting special emphasis on next Saturday’s protest. It is hoped, with Christmas out of the way, that many more people will attend on 27th December, to “keep the pressure on the government”.
